How to Speed Up Metabolism
How to Speed Up Metabolism
12 Comments on How to Speed Up MetabolismMany of my patients battle with their weight and seem to get nowhere with dieting and exercise alone. Such was the case for 57 year old Juanita who came to see me complaining of excess weight, fatigue and sore breasts. She had most of the weight around her middle and had the tell tale roll of fat around her upper abdomen, which often indicates a fatty liver.
I ran some tests on Juanita and found the following –
- A fatty liver was obvious from her ultrasound scan of the upper abdomen
- A sluggish thyroid with a blood TSH level of 4
- Examination of her breasts revealed tender ropey areas of breast tissue
I explained to Juanita that her fatty liver was not breaking down the unhealthy oestrogen known as oestrone, which was being produced in her fat tissues. The oestrone was building up in her body and was making her breast tissue inflamed.
Her fatty liver could not cope with her hormonal imbalance and this was perpetuating her metabolic problem.
A fatty liver is not regulating fat metabolism efficiently and instead of burning fat, it stores fat.
The combination of a fatty liver and sluggish thyroid caused a very low metabolic rate leading to inability to burn dietary calories efficiently. This poor lady was trying to lose weight with exercise and calorie restriction but her slow metabolic rate made this impossible.
To speed up her metabolism we had to improve her liver function and get the unhealthy fat out of her liver. It was also vital to improve the production of thyroid hormone, as this hormone stimulates the energy factories inside every cell of the body.
I started Juanita on the Quickloss Diet and Quickloss meal shakes.
I recommended that she avoid sugar and high carbohydrate foods such as bread, pasta, cookies, muffins, donuts, cakes and desserts. Because she had an underactive thyroid gland I told her to stay gluten free. Gluten containing foods can really slowdown the metabolism in people with thyroid problems and intestinal problems.
I also encouraged Juanita to eat more vegetable salads to improve her liver function.
When I saw her 3 months later, she had lost 18 kilograms and the roll of fat had gone from her upper abdomen. Her blood test showed an improvement of thyroid function with her TSH level now at 2. She had much more energy and no longer felt like having an afternoon sleep. This was because her metabolic rate had increased, so that dietary calories were now converted to physical energy instead of fat. As we get older we need to support the function of the liver and the thyroid gland, otherwise our metabolism often gradually slows down.
The thyroid gland and metabolism
The problem of a slow metabolism was illustrated by another woman I had first seen several years ago. She was aged 55 and had weighed around 80 kilograms for 6 years. She suffered with a thyroid condition known as Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, which is an autoimmune disorder named after Dr Hashimoto. Eventually the thyroid gland becomes so damaged that it is unable to manufacture adequate levels of thyroid hormone and an underactive thyroid condition occurs, which varies from mild to severe. In most cases of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis it will be necessary to give the patient thyroid hormone tablets to bring blood levels of thyroid hormone back to normal. Ideally this will restore an efficient metabolism and relieve the symptoms. This patient had been taking Thyroxine tablets for years but they were not really working as well as she had hoped; she remained overweight and tired. The Thyroxine tablets provide the T 4 form of thyroid hormone, which contains 4 molecules of iodine, and the body converts the T 4 into a much more active form of thyroid hormone known as T 3, which contains 3 molecules of iodine. Unfortunately in this woman, this conversion of T 4 into T 3 was not occurring, and this was obvious from her blood tests. I explained to her that T 3 was much more active than T 4 and unless she had adequate levels of T 3 in her body, her metabolic rate would remain too low for her to lose weight. She was very relieved and asked me to balance her thyroid function as quickly as possible as she really wanted to lose weight and feel energetic again.
I started her on Porcine Thyroid Extract, as this form of thyroid hormone contains both T 4 and T 3. I also gave her some extra pure T 3 capsules to take in a dose of one every morning.
I also started her on the Quickloss Diet and Quickloss Shakes as she wanted to lose weight quickly. Quickloss contains selenium and iodine, along with other vitamins and minerals, and the selenium and iodine in particular are vital for efficient thyroid function. Selenium helps the conversion of T 4 into T 3 and helps to keep thyroid tissue healthy. The thyroid gland tissue concentrates (accumulates) the mineral selenium for a reason – mother nature knows best!
Well I did not see her again for nearly 6 months but when she finally returned and told me of her incredible success with this Quickloss program I was really impressed. Since the introduction of my program she had lost 18.5 kilograms and regained her wellbeing; indeed she told me that she felt 20 years younger!
Once again I saw the excellent results of increasing the metabolic rate with a holistic program
So many patients battle with their weight and low energy levels simply because their thyroid hormone levels are out of balance. It does not have to be this hard and it is sad to see so many people struggle to get the right kind of treatment.

Hi Dr Cabot, progress report, well it’s week 10 of both the quick loss and syndrome x shakes and I’ve lost almost 3kg. It’s slow like you said it would be for me with the fatty liver, but I’m feeling much better. I’ve lost almost 20cm all up too. No more bloating…people are noticing the change in the shape of my body, which gives me the confidence to continue til I reach my first goal of 5kg, then hopefully 10kg by Christmas ….I’m also taking the livatone tablets. Is there anything else I can do to maybe increase the weight loss speed?
Thanks
Hi Dr Cabot, the weight is slowly coming off as you said. It’s only been 3weeks since I started quick loss and only 1 week since I received the synd x powder. I’m up to 2.2kg (on and off…it changes daily ) and have lost 8cm so far. I’m starting to feel better and I feel much lighter already. The bloating has gone down dramatically. I’ve also just found out that I am lactose intolerant so I’ve bought some lactose free milk to have the shakes with. (I just wish I had bought more powder whilst it was on special!!). I am also taking your Livertone tablets.i am really looking forward to reaching my goal of 5 kg by August and 10kg by Christmas….thank you for all your advice. I will keep posting my progress…
Hi Dr Cabot, I have been diagnosed with diffused fatty liver (I have had fatty liver for some years now) and I have been unable to lose weight. I started on the quickloss shakes last week, but only lost 400grams after the first week. Will that weightloss increase weekly as the fatty liver improves? I was hoping to lose 2kg the first week. I am aiming at losing 10kg. I don’t want to lose hope after reading all these great results.
Dear Julie,
When the liver is fatty you need to be a bit more patient, as we have to get the fat out of the liver. Here is what I suggest – have one Synd – X Slimming protein Powder shake for breakfast – use dairy or coconut milk with a few berries or passionfruit. Have a Quickloss Shake for lunch to get the vitamins and minerals you need in middle of day. take a good liver formula. have your thyroid function checked – including levels of reverse T 3 as well as free T 3. if your reverse T 3 is higher than normal, it is because of fatty liver – in such case we need to give you some T 3 tabs. If the liver is fatty the conversion of T 4 into T 3 is slow and often goes into wrong shaped T 3 = reverse shaped T 3. this takes time to correct

Thank you Dr Cabot, I have just purchased the Synd X powder, and am anxiously awaiting delivery so I can follow your suggestions. I will have to check the thyroid functions, last time (a couple of years ago ) it was checked it was normal. I forgot to mention that my cholesterol levels were also high, so my GP put me on Crestor tablets and in about 8weeks my levels are now normal. I will keep in touch with you. Ps do you take appointments ? I would love to see you sometime. Many years ago I also purchased and followed your Liver Cleansing diet which was great. And I have two other books, Synd X and Fatty Liver. They are so good – congratulations ….

Hi Dr Cabot, I have enlarged goiter and my doctor tells me that I have a multinodular goiter. Based on the results of a RNAC, my endocrinologist said that the appearance is suggestive of a colloid goiter. Based on my last blood test, my thyroid levels are within the normal range. I recall that in one of your books, you mentioned that people with my condition shoud avoid dairy? I have been really struggling with this as I can’t seem to give up my coffee / tea with milk. I take these beverages with stevia. I am also quite desparate to stop my weight gain. I am a 42 year old lady and eat late at night when stressed at work. I am trying the Quickloss Meal replacement but that is milk based. Can I continue? Thank you.
Vimla
continue with Quickloss Diet and Shakes – they work! Please get your blood tested for level of Reverse T 3 (it is not on medicare and costs around $80.00) If your Reverse T 3 is too high, you need T 3 tablets – we can help with that. you also need extra selenium and iodine. do not eat rubbish late at night = you are poisoning your gut and liver = slow metabolism. try to avoid gluten.
if you are hungry late at night, eat nuts, Greek yogurt or make a smoothie with coconut milk and Synd X Slimming Protein Powder and passionfruit
If you want to learn some wonderful meditation/satisfaction techniques let me know

Hi Ansu,
It is good to be gluten free and sugar free but some dairy such as natural cheeses and Greek yogurt are healthy. well I recommend you read my book titled Your Thyroid Problems Solved. It sounds like you have Thyroid Resistance and need some T 3 (triiodothyronine as well as the Thyroxine you are taking. Thyroid resistance is common and stops weight loss. you should try the Quickloss Diet Shakes and meal plan – it works !! Stick to it exactly. Selenium and Iodine are minerals which are needed for healthy thyroid function – these minerals are added to the Quickloss Shake. If your periods are heavy (bleeding), you will benefit from progesterone cream 100mg daily. This will all help fertility
I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid last year. I am on a sugar free, grain and glutenfree, dairy free diet. Have lost only 8kg in the last 3 months. I struggle getting up in the mornings, have to take a nap between 9 and 11 most mornings…very low energy. What would you suggest. I am 40, would like to have babies and need to loos about 45kg.
I gave been told I cannot do iodine because of having hashimoto thyroiditis.
Hi Deanna
I disagree with that because it is not logical. Check your urinary iodine levels – they should be over 100. Adequate iodine is essential to reduce risk of thyroid cancer, reduce risk of breast cancer and to keep thyroid tissue healthy. Iodine is also needed to manufacture thyroid hormone
